The vision of the 2000-watt society of achieving sustainable development in the long run also places high demands on energy and building technology. Over half of the current gross energy consumption is required directly or indirectly for the construction and operation of buildings – 60% of that alone for the residential building sector.

As was pointed out within the framework of the project entitled “Energy and building technology for the 2000-watt society – Swiss model”, suitable combinations of building and building services technology are already available as individual solutions. A building according to Minergie-P standard, equipped with a heat pump, is capable of reducing the gross energy consumption by a factor of 3 and fossil energy consumption even by a factor of 12 in comparison to the present average. However, as far as implementation is concerned, such individual solutions are subject to the pace of new building construction and renovation of the Swiss stock of buildings.
