Methane from wood

The focus of the novatlantis project ECOGAS Mobility is on analysis and optimization of the entire chain from forest to gas-driven vehicle, i.e. from the provision of wood from Swiss forests and production of biogas to thermal gasification and distribution via the natural gas network and finally to its use as fuel in low-emission vehicles.

If energy-producing wood can be converted into a gas with a high methane content that is compatible with natural gas (Synthetic Natural Gas, SNG) at reasonable cost and with a high degree of efficiency, this will open up a wide variety of options for clean use of this renewable source of energy. One of the professed goals of Gazobois is to set up a technical facility in Eclépens in the canton of Vaud for the production of SNG from wood with a total capacity of 20 MW. Gazobois has entered into a partnership with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in order to realize this project. The project Ecogas consists of two subprojects: "Methanation of wood gas" and "Wood gasification plant in Güssing".
