Challenges and chances for the urbane development
Tool for sustainable districts by SméO
With a very successfully visited trade conference on the subject «sustainable district development - fashion appearance or need?» on May 18th, 2011 the Swiss Federal Office for Energy and the Federal Office for Spatial Development have given an important prelude to the support of national district projects .
At the same time the online tool "sustainable districts by sméo" was launched and the pamphlet „sustainable districts, challenges and chances for the urbane development" was published.
Information about the freely accessible tool and its new conversion programme, as well as to the freely downloadable pamphlet and the talks of the conference is available on the platform www.nachhaltige-quartiere.ch.
From 2003 until 2007, a project supported by the Swiss Federal Offices of Energy examined space development and housing within sustainable area development in four concrete areas throughout Switzerland: the Gundeldinger field in Basel, Bellavaux in Lusanne, Basel-/Bern-street in Lucerne and the Werdwies in Zurich.

- Bustling meeting areas, one of the goals of sustainable area development
A first publication presents why the four Swiss federal offices have committed themselves to sustainable area development. The four different areas are introduced along with their individual starting positions and end targets. Phase 1 of the project defines what is to be understood in regard to sustainable area development, which is to say the important areas of application and their criteria. These results are summarized in a second brochure.
The most important areas of concentration and their corresponding opportunities and risks were elaborated in phase 2. Furthermore, a possible procedural model was developed which can serve as a guideline towards completion of the interesting challenge of sustainable area development. The results of phase 2 are presented in a 3rd brochure. Talks are currently underway between Novatlantis and the Federal Office of Energy concerning a following project.
The Federal Office of energy and the Federal Office of environment have launched in June, 2009 the project "sustainable area development". His aim is the development of an assessment help and decision guidance to sustainable areas which should be made available to the municipalities and other interested partners. Additional information is available from www.naqu.ch.
